DTP – Dynamic Trunking Protocol

Dynamic Trunking Protocol (called DTP in short) is CISCO proprietary used for negotiating a trunk link between two switches. Encapsulation type can be one from 802.1q or ISL. DTP is a layer 2 (data link) protocol and it is enabled by default.

Trunk ports are used to carry traffic of more than one VLAN. If there is a requirement when a port which connects two different switches with more than one VLAN to traverse them, in that case the port should be trunk. If all the VLANs are allowed, then trunk ports will carry traffic of all the VLANs including native VLAN for which the traffic goes untagged. Trunk link traffic is encapsulated or tagged either by ISL or dot1Q mechanism. Most of the times, all the switch ports are access ports, therefore to make a port trunk, user should manually make it trunk by using DTP. Below are modes of DTP:-

  • Switchport Mode Access (DTP mode OFF)
    In this mode, the switch interface is forced to be in a permanent non trunking mode whether the neighbour interface is trunk or access. Notable is that only a single VLAN is allowed in this mode (access port only). This will be layer 2 statically configured access port.
  • Switchport Mode Trunk (DTP mode ON)
    In this mode, the interface is forced to be a permanent trunk. Multiple VLANs are allowed from the interface configured in this mode. The interface will become a trunk interface.
  • Switchport Mode Dynamic Auto
    This is a default mode on the older CISCO switches. In this mode the interface is able to convert to a trunk link. The interface will become a trunk link if the neighbour device interface is set to trunk or desirable mode. If both side interface mode are in auto mode, then the trunk will not be formed.
  • Switchport Mode Dynamic Desirable
    This is the default mode on the newer Cisco switches. In this case, interface will actively attempt to convert the link into a trunk link/port. The interface will become a trunk port if the neighbour device interface is set to trunk, desirable or auto.
  • Switchport Nonegotiate
    In this mode, the interface prevents from generating the DTP frames. This command is used only when the switchport is access or trunk. You must manually configure the neighbor interface as a trunk interface to establish a trunk link.

DTP is a negotiation protocol between switch port to make port access or trunk depending upon the mode selection. It is layer 2 protocol and Encapsulation method it may use are either of 802.1q or ISL.
