iSCSI vs Fibre Channel has been one of the most talked about topic especially in Storage domain. The competition has become fierce in last 10 years with new technologies like FCOE etc. coming to the scene. If the business requirement is for true SAN and not direct attached shared storage, then FC is the clear winner. Caveat – FC being very expensive, requires dedicated switches and host bus adaptors and difficult to support in geographically distributed environments. iSCSI has challenged FC at every point and threatens to migrate bulk of customers using dedicated SAN environment to shared infrastructure supporting iSCSI technology. iSCSI entered the IT domain while targeting SMB market and slowly climbing its way into the enterprise.
