While selecting passive infrastructure for home and office networking, CAT5 and CAT5e are the 2 cabling standards which come into mind. Nowadays, with invent of high performances networking devices, CAT5e has taken up pace in contrast to CAT5.If customer is not sure whether to order CAT5 OR CAT5e, it is recommend t order CAT5e. Reason being CAT5e can support speeds upto 1 Gbps unlike CAT5 which supports speed upto 100 Mbps. Also that CAT5e is completely backwards compatible and cost difference with CAT5 is not so substantial.
The “e” in CAT5e stands for “Enhanced.”, however there is no physical differences between CAT5 and CAT5e cables, but 5e Ethernet has improved durability, due to improved quality and thickness of its jacket.
Below table enumerates some of similarities between CAT5 and CAT5e –
Now that we understand similarities between both cabling standards, let’s understand how CAT5 is different from CAT5ein terms of various parameters –
