LiFi vs WiFi – Detailed Comparison

Introduction to LiFi and WiFi

LiFi transmits data through light (LED flicker), offering very high potential speeds and no radio interference, but it needs line-of-sight and can’t pass through walls. WiFi uses radio waves, so it has longer range, works through walls, and remains the widely deployed standard. LiFi is best for secure, high-density indoor use; WiFi wins for general mobility and coverage.

If you’re not satisfied with how your WiFi network works, be relieved to know that there’s a new innovation called LiFi will shortly overpower normal WiFi speed. Introducing the LiFi, a new technology that is 10 to 100 times faster than the WiFi.

Now that we know LiFi will be big threat to WiFi technology , its important that we know how both are different and each outshines the other . We as users will feel the new LiFi Technology conquering the world with its state of art technology and underpinning features.

What is LiFi?

LiFi (Light Fidelity) is a wireless communication technology that uses visible light—typically from LED bulbs—to transmit data, instead of radio waves like WiFi. It works by rapidly flickering LEDs (imperceptible to the human eye) to encode data, which a photodetector on the receiving device picks up and decodes.

Key Characteristics

  • Speed: Can theoretically reach multi-Gbps speeds, since visible light has a much larger spectrum than radio frequencies.
  • Range/line-of-sight: Limited to the area lit by the source and doesn’t pass through walls or opaque objects—this makes it inherently more secure (signal can’t be intercepted from outside a room) but restricts mobility.
  • No RF interference: Safe for use in places where radio signals are restricted, like hospitals, aircraft, or sensitive industrial environments.

Use Cases

Indoor high-density environments, secure facilities, underwater communication (where RF doesn’t travel well), and as a complement to WiFi rather than a full replacement.

It was coined by Professor Harald Haas around 2011 and is standardized under IEEE 802.11bb.

What is WiFi?

WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to connect devices—laptops, phones, routers—to a local network and the internet, without physical cables.

Key Characteristics

  • How it works: A router transmits and receives data over radio frequency bands, most commonly 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, with 6 GHz added in newer standards.
  • Standards: Governed by the IEEE 802.11 family (e.g., 802.11n, ac, ax/WiFi 6, and the newer WiFi 7/802.11be), each generation improving speed, range, and efficiency.
  • Range: Typically covers 30–50 meters indoors, penetrating walls and floors reasonably well, though with some signal loss.
  • Speed: Modern WiFi 6/6E/7 routers can deliver multi-Gbps speeds under ideal conditions.

Use Cases

The default wireless standard for homes, offices, and public spaces—supports mobility, multiple simultaneous device connections, and broad interoperability across virtually all consumer electronics.

Its main trade-offs compared to newer tech like LiFi are potential interference from other RF devices and comparatively higher security exposure, since radio signals can pass through walls and be intercepted from outside a room.
